Love not the World

1John 2:15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.

Meaning of the biblical word - world

World - cosmos, The world in this case is the sphere of ungodliness that dominates mankind because of his fallen state. The word cosmos refers to order - arrangement and in the bad sense, the order - arrangement under which Satan has organized this world of fallen mankind upon his principles of selfishness, force, greed, ambitions, and pleasure. This worlds system is very often, outwardly religious, cultured, philosophical, and refined but blind to the truth.

What does it mean to love the world and the things of this world?

It is when we consider this world and the things of it more important and of greater value then God and the things of God.

A love for worldly things leads into idolatry and away from God.

2Timothy 4:10 ... For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world,

1Corinthians 10:14  Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

As Christians we are not a part of this world, please notice what Jesus said:

John 17:14  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

We are constantly bombarded by this world's influence, it's standards and values. For us to effectively resist we must realize the truths of God's word concerning Christians.

Let us look at some of theses truths concerning Christians.

1. We are not of this world.

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

John 17:14  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

2. We are no longer in the world of darkness

Colossians 1:13  Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

3. We are strangers and pilgrims in this world

1Peter 2:11  Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

4. We are not to conform to this world

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Conform - to fashion oneself after,  to be like

We are not to allow this world's values and standards to dictate the way we live, the way we speak, the way we dress, our family values etc.

We derive our values and standards from God's word the Holy Bible.  Jesus said we live
not by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God  (Mat. 4:4)

5. Beware of the world's philosophies

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

6. Christians are to seek the things of God

Colossians 3:1-3  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

7. Christians are to be a light to the world

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Christians cannot be a light to the world if they are like the world, therefore we must:

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Jesus Said:

Mat 16:26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

8. Be not unequally yoke with

2Corinthians 6:14-18 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
