Physical Death

Back

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2  To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die;

Physical death occurs when the soul and spirit of a person departs from their bodies.

The biblical meaning for death is separation. Spiritual death is separation from God.

Until a person receives Jesus Christ as their Savior, they are in a state of spiritual death.

People that physically die, in a state of spiritual death, will stand in judgment at the Great White Throne Judgment. After this judgment they are cast into the Lake of Fire which is called the second death.

Revelation 20:11-15   And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The scriptures declare:

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Concerning the Christian

A Christian is one that has heard the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, believes the message and responds in faith by receiving Jesus Christ as their Savior. With this, goes the responsibility of living ones life for Christ.

Upon receiving Jesus Christ as their Savior, a new birth takes place in a person's spirit, that is why Jesus said:

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Born again people are declared to be New Creatures.

2Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Born again people are no longer in a state of spiritual death; in Christ, they are back in fellowship with God.

When a Christian dies Physically

2Corinthians 5:1-6 For we know that if our earthly house of [this] tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4 For we that are in [this] tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing [is] God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore [we are] always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

2Corinthians 5:7-8 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, [I say], and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Philippians 1:21-24   For to me to live [is] Christ, and to die [is] gain.
22 But if I live in the flesh, this [is] the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh [is] more needful for you.

Concerning life after death

Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Mat 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

The Point

Moses died in the Old Testament but here he is talking with Jesus 1-2 thousand years later.

We don't have to fear death

Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

The Scriptures say:

John3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Joh 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.....
